Swapped houses with a friend of mine this weekend. We are all broke, and occasionally a house swap provides a stimulating change of air and scenery. Paula and her fella stayed at our place, my sister took our kids for a couple of nights and Beloved and I spent two nights at Paula’s in the country. We had the place to ourselves, except for Rocky, Paula’s Yorkshire Terrier.

There comes a time in every woman’s life when she must decide whether to go grey or dye. My natural temperament is upbeat but still I opted to dye. I have spent a decade doing raven black – dress it up or go goth as the mood takes you. The kids on our street call us The Addams Family. I don’t mind one jot being compared to Morticia. My Darling Gomez is moustached, we have one plump and one skinny kid and our friends are a weird and wonderful bunch. In fact I take the reference as a compliment – The Addams Family is the least dysfunctional family on TV. But I digress.

Getting the creative juices flowing is not easy. And Mr Fowler didn’t have a monthly hormonal roller coaster to contend with. Some people believe that it is easier for women to write because we are more in touch with our emotional side. Poppycock. In my experience it is harder for women to do anything consistently because of our hormones.
